Published on 24 October 2008, AA1000AS 2008 marks a major step forward for sustainability assurance. It reflects developments in the understanding and practice of stakeholder engagement and materiality, and provides greater clarity. These changes enable a more rigorous, consistent and high-quality approach to assurance.

AA1000AS 2008 also reflects three newly revised accountability principles: inclusivity (now known as the foundation principle), materiality and responsiveness. These principles are set out in a new standard - the AA1000 Accountability Principles Standard.

We believe more and more companies seeking to build stakeholder trust will turn to AA1000AS when seeking independent assurance of their sustainability and CSR reports. While we welcome the new version, it is clear that it places greater demands on reporting companies. So, to promote understanding of AA1000AS, particularly in its latest incarnation, we have carried out this study of how big business measures up.

We have delved into the unique data we hold - thanks to our annual global Accountability Rating, which we conduct in partnership with AccountAbility - about the practices and performance of the world's 100 largest companies (the G100). This has enabled us to uncover the extent to which they currently adhere to the new accountability principles, and to pick out the top performers.

We hope the report will help you:

  • understand the new AA1000 principles
  • learn how the G100 perform in the context of the principles
  • get a feel for where you're ahead or behind the game
  • find out where to go for examples of good practice.

Two Tomorrows is the clear market leader in the provision of independent report assurance using the AA1000 Assurance Standard (AA1000AS).
