Strategic advice and benchmarking for steel giant
Since 2006, steel giant ArcelorMittal (formerly Mittal Steel) has sought advice and support from Two Tomorrows on the development and management of its CSR programme.
Initially, we carried out comprehensive benchmarking to assess the CR strengths and weaknesses of Mittal Steel globally and regionally. We did an external benchmark against peers, customers and leaders in CR, and combined this with internal benchmarking of the company’s operations worldwide using our Reality Check tool. The Reality Check assesses CR or sustainability programmes in different parts of the same organisation in areas including auditing, management systems, policies and communication.
After the merger of Mittal Steel with Arcelor in 2007, the company asked us to extend our benchmarking to compare the former Arcelor operations with the former Mittal operations we had examined in 2006. As a result, we were able to advise ArcelorMittal on a global strategy, policies and standards to ensure a consistent approach to CR globally.
We then helped with development of the strategy. As part of this, we designed community engagement training for local management teams, and delivered it through a guidebook and train-the-trainer materials.
As part of our work for ArcelorMittal, we helped the company develop its first CR review. This involved crafting the report structure, working with the company management and design teams, collecting and processing data, drafting text for specific sections, reviewing and editing, and generating board-level buy-in and sign-off prior to publication.
