Helping GRI write its G3 reporting guidelines

We were asked by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) to draft the protocols for how companies should compile and present data when using its third-generation sustainability reporting guidelines, known as the G3 guidelines.

In the 18 months leading up to the release of G3 in October 2006, we led the development of the technical protocols for each of around 100 indicators covered by the guidelines. Our aim was to ensure that each indicator was clear in meaning and that companies could report their performance on each indicator in a way that is reliable, auditable and comparable between companies.

Working with our partners, Triple Innova and Just Solutions, we developed draft protocols and then submitted them to international multi-stakeholder GRI advisory groups before refining them in response to comments.

This work has given us a unique understanding of best practice in measuring sustainability.
