Hands-on help with pioneering report

We helped West Sussex County Council develop its debut sustainability report, published in September 2008. It was the first-ever such report by a county council in the UK, and one of the few in the world by a local authority.

We started by helping the client identify the right overall reporting approach. This was based on research we undertook to identify best practice in public sector reporting in the UK, in Europe, and worldwide. We then provided hands-on support in report development, including collating information and drafting text. We also collaborated with the client’s web designers to support online publication of the report.

The report covered the key material issues for the County Council, including climate change, transport, waste and recycling, employee volunteering and buildings management. Case studies were used to demonstrate good sustainability practices.

The report was published online as a full-length downloadable PDF and in summary form as an e-book.

The report is the first step in the West Sussex County Council ‘s long-term plan to develop its sustainability reporting, and an important signal of its commitment to integrating sustainability into its day-to-day operations.
