Advice on sustainability guidelines

We provided sustainable development advice and practical management support to Project SIGMA, a joint government and industry initiative in the UK that seeks to provide clear, practical advice to organisations to help them make a meaningful contribution to sustainable development.

Project SIGMA is a collaborative initiative involving a wide range of stakeholders from business, government, NGOs, consultancies and research organisations. It is funded by the Department for Enterprise, Business and Regulatory Reform (BERR – formerly the Department of Trade and Industry). The founding partners were BERR, the international think-tank AccountAbility, the sustainable development charity Forum for the Future, and the British Standards Institution (BSI).

We advised on the development of guidelines for organisations, and drafted key sections. We also managed a year-long pilot project to test out the guidelines in 16 commercial and public organisations. A crucial aspect of our work was coordinating and facilitating the network of organisations involved in Project SIGMA. Other key tasks were recruiting partners for the pilot and then analysing the results and recommending how the guidelines needed to be revised.
